Ketogenic Diet or Keto Diet: The Diary of a girl who loves carbs!

img_0639Ketosis Diet

For those of us that don’t know what the ketosis diet is or what is commonly called the keto diet; it is a low or no carb high fat diet ( I know it sounds awful hang on ) . Well according to a bazillion and one websites, this diet plan is supposed to work miracles for those of us strong enough to go without carbs, and no there is no strength involved. From what I have read the hardest part of the diet is to have the strength to say no to all those delicious carbs and treats, like pasta, rice, soda-pop and anything else high in sugars.

What does it do you ask?

Good question! Well first we all know from all of those health classes in school and nutrition or foods classes way back in middle and high school that our body needs carbs to convert into energy to keep us awake and alert throughout the day or so we thought. what we weren’t taught or at least what i was taught, is that our bodies can function just fine without carbs and that our body starts to run off our fat reserves once our body has no carbs left to run on. Well according to the wonderful website Web MD,

“Ketosis is a normal metabolic process, something your body does to keep working. When it doesn’t have enough carbohydrates from food for your cells to burn for energy, it burns fat instead. As part of this process, it makes ketones.

If you’re healthy and eating a balanced diet, your body controls how much fat it burns, and you don’t normally make or use ketones. But when you cut way back on your calories or carbs, your body will switch to ketosis for energy. It can also happen after exercising for a long time and during pregnancy.” (Web MD Medical Reference Reviewed by Michael Dansinger, MD on January 17, 2017) retrieved from

So there is some science behind it, but that is not what this post is about. If you wanna do more research and I HIGHLY recommend you do before ever attempting this diet, you can you the link I provided above. Now into the point of my post, I am by no means overweight or obese, I simply just want to shred some extra pounds around my tummy. Before you start on the “why don’t you just eat healthy and exercise more” Well miss no it all, I do! I have done the whole body slimming meal prepping thing for months and I used to spend $60+ a month just on a gym membership before we bought our home gym set. I would go 4-5 times a week to the gym and while I have become toned in my arms, glutes and back my stomach remains the same. So after avoiding this diet like crazy because well I love carbs (like most of us probably do). I thought ” Hey I could try this!” so this leads me into the next part of my post. I am going to start a diary of everyday of this diet so anyone who may be interested can see how it affects me! ( I’ll be your guinea pig) If you are interested at all please continue to read ahead!

Day One!

Alright here we go! My first morning on my diet I started off by waking up early so I could prep some food for the day. I started by making some ground turkey with taco seasoning for my lunch and dinner. I don’t recommend turkey on this diet only because it is a lean meat, but its what I had available. While I was waiting for it to be done cooking I started hard boiling some eggs to have on hand for a snack, I also made my self a cup of coffee. For breakfast I had two of my Hard-boiled eggs and my cup of coffee with some creamer, not a bad morning.

For lunch I made myself some lettuce tacos. This included my measured out in ounces ground taco turkey and my mexican cheese also measured out in grams. I do recommend with any diet buying a food scale and download a weight app. For this experiment I am using the app Lifesum. For a snack I measured out a serving of raspberries, blueberries and 2 tbsp of chocolate chips. Something to remember with any weight loss journey is that staying hydrated is important especially with this diet drink double your daily intake.

Well so far my day hasn’t really felt like I was dieting. All I have done differently is replacing my usual tortilla shell and replacing it with some romaine lettuce leaves. Now for dinner I repeated the same thing I had for lunch and cooked some bacon when I got home from work. I had two pieces of bacon before bed because I was behind on my fat intake. ( How strange right??) Well off to bed i go and this concludes my day one!

Day two of the Keto Diet

Alright Day two of the whole no carb thing. Lets see….. well I didn’t wake up as early as I wanted too but still for me I was out of bed without the whole complaining thing so that was different. I tried the Keto coffee thing and it was well weird. If you haven’t heard of Keto coffee it is pretty much black coffee, butter and coconut oil and creamer of your choice. Not that it wasn’t good but it is definitely different, its a great way to add fat into your diet since it is actually surprisingly hard to get fat in your diet, well a lot of fat that is. After my coffee I had two hard boiled eggs and was out my door and on my way to work.

For lunch I had the same thing I had the day before, some romaine lettuce tacos with cheese and seasoned turkey meat. A this point I think I am doing good at this whole Keto thing, well after work my boyfriend and I went to Adult Night at the Minnesota Zoo (more to come) well that is when the cravings kicked in. The whole point of adult night is so you can roam the zoo with no kids and have an alcoholic drink or two. Well there was problem one, I CANT DRINK BEER OR WINE! why you ask? The carbs. So I walked around with a Diet Coke while my boyfriend had a beer or two in front of me. (I wasn’t jealous or anything  *insert eye rolling emoji*)

After the Zoo we were both super hungry so we went to Hy-vee to do some grocery shopping since all we had at home was carbs and more carbs. After all my research online I realized cauliflower seems to be the holy grail item of the Ketogenic diet for pizza and other carb substituted food. We bought a pre-made cauliflower pizza crust and went home. After consuming this very thin and not so bad tasting homemade pizza i realized something………the crust was INFUSED with cauliflower! UGH! I failed so now 60 grams over my Carb goal of the day I went to bed defeated.

Day Three of Keto Diet

Okay! Day three! You think at this point I would be like CAAAAAARBS FEED ME! But no surprisingly not. I woke up around 10 AM today since after all it is a Saturday and also my day off. I started off my morning with making my Keto coffee, which today consisted of the same dark roast coffee, a TBSP of kerrygold butter, a TBSP of coconut oil and some fair life chocolate milk. After i had blended my coffee all together I had 4 slices of bacon for my breakfast “meal” if you even wanna call it that HAHA. Well now that breakfast is done I ran upstairs to change for the day and was off to dog sit my brothers dog

Hi everyone! Sorry I have been so MIA lately… this blogging thing is a lot harder than it seems. SO, an update on my Keto diet. I am currently down five pounds and I believe I am going into my fourth week of my diet. So to be honest I am not totally discouraged but I am a little bummed because I have read and watched so many keto journeys of other people with them saying they lost 10+ pounds of weight in the first month, however that doesn’t mean I am doing it wrong or that I am cheating on my diet (which I haven’t surprisingly) all this means to myself is that I don’t have as much fat being burned as others. Each individual has a different BMI or body mass index and mine as I have stated in earlier posts is between 22-25%. SO, I am by no means a “heavy” or “unhealthy” individual I just have a little extra squish that I am self-conscious about and would be happier if it was not on my hips.

With the above being said I wanted to share something new that I have purchased to help keep me on track with my ketosis. I purchased Perfect Keto test strips.

What is a test strip you may ask WELL it is a little stick that looks and reminds me a lot of those chlorine tabs anyone with a pool may be familiar with but you pee on it! I know sounds fun right? I purchased these pee sticks because your urine is actually an excellent source of data for ketones. Since I am not serious about making this a permanent lifestyle change I thought spending $8 on 100 strips to pee on would be a great way to track my level of ketosis. The other options for those who are serious about making this a permanent lifestyle change could be to buy a blood meter which is much like the meters for those of us who are diabetic use to track sugar levels or a breathalyzer to track ketones in your breath, however those options are much more reliable, but they do cost upwards of $100+. Those handy little test strips are the right option for me, so what do they do? And how do you use them? Im happy you asked! So, the short answer is you pee on it and it changes colors (fun right?) For me every night before I go to bed I use them as part of my nightly routine, and since most people pee before they go to bed and I don’t normally eat after brushing my teeth I will do it as an end of the night thing; it will tell me on the side of the bottle depending on what color your stick changed colors too correlates to what level of ketones are being produced in your body. Hopefully your stick goes to the darkest color which means more ketones are being produced which in tail means more fat being burned during that day.

Well that is everything for today! See you all in the next post!
